The capacity limit for MICE events in Singapore involving more than 1,000 persons has been raised to 75% as part of the new changes made to the country’s safe management measures.

To come into effect on March 29, 2022, this is an increase from the previous limit of 50% of the maximum number of individuals specified under Singapore’s Fire Safety Act, or 50% of the fixed seating for the event venue, whichever is higher.

At the same time, Singapore will, from April 1 this year, remove all existing vaccinated travel lines (VTL) and unilateral opening arrangements for all fully vaccinated travellers.

Under the new vaccinated travel framework, visitors to Singapore will no longer need to apply for entry approvals or take designated VTL transport to enter Singapore quarantine-free.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said, that this will reconnect Singapore with the world, [and] will give them a much-needed boost to businesses, particularly the tourism sector, and help Singaporeans reclaim its position as a business and aviation hub.

The ability of foreign business delegates to attend events in Singapore more freely will also come as a boon for the MICE industry, as it looks to build on the encouraging recovery of 2021.

Last year, Singapore hosted more than 200 MICE events with almost 50,000 local and international attendees, including the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, which acted as a platform to test new protocols in the country.

Speaking earlier this year, Yap Chin Siang, Deputy Chief Executive, Singapore Tourism Board (STB), that these events in 2022 and beyond are expected to bring in tourism receipts of more than S$50 billion.

All this underpins the appeal of Singapore as a preferred MICE destination and it’s a testament to the level of international confidence in our ability to hold world-class events safely and securely, especially in a post-COVID environment.
