The Slovak authorities have announced that from today, May 24, until June 8, the country will keep in place internal border controls with Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary.

According to the Ministry of Interior of Slovakia, such a decision has been taken to ensure safety while several events take place in the country, Schengen Visa website reports.

The Ministry explains that during the time that the internal border controls with the four countries mentioned above will be in place, the GLOBSEC Conference will take place.

The same said that a meeting of the Hells Angels motorcycle clubs, a concert, sports events, and more will take place from today until June 8.

In the coming days, several events will take place on the territory of the Slovak Republic, at which, according to preliminary information, massive participation of not only Slovak but also foreign visitors is expected.

This is, for example, a meeting of the Hells Angels motorcycle club, a concert of a world-famous music group, sports events, the GLOBSEC conference and more, the statement of the Ministry reads.

Moreover, the Ministry emphasises that the aim of the border controls is to be able to adopt necessary measures that ensure public order as well as security on the territory of Slovakia.

As explained, the police, the Armed Forces, and the Financial Administration of Slovakia will carry out targeted checks at the entry points.

In addition to the above-mentioned, it has been highlighted that during the time that the internal border checks are in place with Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary, those who wish to enter Slovakia from through one of these countries will only be able to do so at certain border crossing points.

Nonetheless, certain people are exempted from such a rule, such as hunters, fishermen, and those working in the agriculture industry, provided that their activities are performed within five kilometres of the internal border.

Moreover, international train and air transport will not be restricted or changed either.

In order to accelerate the border crossing process for all those who will be entering Slovakia from Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary in the next two weeks, the Ministry has advised that everyone keeps their travel documents ready for inspection.

Citizens of the EU can cross the border by only showing their national identity card. On the other hand, nationals of other countries are required to show their passport as well as a visa if applied.
