Solo travel could boost the growth of HCM City’s tourism industry, said Nguyen Thi Ánh Hoa, the deputy director of the city’s Tourism Department. Hoa said that the solo travel community had expanded significantly in the past few years.
In January last year, “solo travel” and “travel alone” were the most popular keywords searched on Google.
According to Klook, a travel activities and services booking platform, last year, the number of solo travelers on its platform increased from 31 per cent to 38 per cent.
In a survey, HCM City was on the list of top 10 favourite destinations of the solo travel community.
“The rapid growth of this trend brings both opportunities and challenges for the city’s State management and travel businesses,” Hoa said.
Solo travellers take their own decisions on services and activities during their trips focusing on personal experiences.
Hoa said that travel agencies need to learn more about solo travellers’ specific requirements for capturing the market.
Paul Pruangkarn, director of Communications and External Affairs at Pacific Asia Travel Association said, “The millennial generation is proving to be tech-savvy and more independent than previous generations.”
With mobile devices that help in planning on the go, and a constant flow of travel inspiration and advice received from social media, millennials in Asia are best prepared to travel freely, Pruangkarn said.
This is also fuelled by an increasing middle class in Asia, and greater connectivity with low-cost carriers, online travel agents, and other disruptive technologies.
