Hundreds of local tourism and hospitality businesses, including restaurants, cafes, pubs and travel and tour operators, have already started receiving new $3,000 and $1,000 cash grants, as part of a sweeping joint Federal-State Government small business support package announced last week.

So far, $4.8 million worth of COVID-19 Tourism and Hospitality Support Grants have been automatically paid into the bank accounts of 1,859 eligible South Australian businesses.

This is in addition to the first round of grants they received last month – meaning employing businesses in this sector who are continuing to do it tough, could have received $9,000 in the past 9 weeks alone – or $10,000 if they operate in the CBD.

Larger businesses in these eligible sectors (also including performing arts, creative artists, taxis and car rental), can apply for top up grants that will take the total grant to $10,000 where turnover is greater than $2m, and $20,000 where turnover is greater than $5m.

Premier Steven Marshall said his Government was doing all it can to back small businesses and local jobs as we emerge from COVID-19.

“We have recently been recognised as the most liveable place in the nation and our COVID recovery plan is focussed on standing shoulder-to-shoulder with small businesses as we chart our path out of the global pandemic,” said Premier Marshall.

“While we have more South Australians employed in full-time work now than ever before, there is no doubt many businesses have been doing it tough, particularly those in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

“That’s why we’re ensuring the grants get out the door and into the pockets of hardworking businesses as quickly as possible.”

In total, so far since the 7-day lockdown in July, more than $85 million in cash grants have been paid to almost 30,000 South Australian small and medium businesses.

Member for Adelaide and Minister for Child Protection Rachel Sanderson said she welcomed the Government’s recent announcement for further funding to support CBD businesses, jobs and livelihoods.

“Our CBD is one of the jewels in South Australia’s tourism crown and that’s why it’s absolutely critical our city remains strong and vibrant,” said Minister Sanderson.

“We continue to work with our city businesses to ensure patronage, jobs and our economy continues to bounce back as we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic – and beyond.

“We’re urging all South Australians to #GoToTown and enjoy all that our city has to offer, while supporting local business by getting shopping tills ringing, our cafes and restaurants buzzing and life back into our CBD streets, parks and tourist attractions.”
