In the next two months strike action will be carried out by South Western Railway five times as the workers will be staging strikes after failure in talks regarding the role of guards.
There will be three fresh strikes in September 2,8 and 15 and members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) will walk out for 24 hours along with strikes on August 18. There will be a 48-hour stoppage from August 31.
As per the union the SWR was reluctant to reach over the long-running dispute and it further accused the company of ‘sabotaging’ talks.
RMT general secretary Mick Cash stated that the there were further strikes as the RMT was angry and frustrated of the company’s cavalier and contemptuous approach to talks. He was aware of the passengers being angry.
He further mentioned that SWR has plenty of money to employ guards on trains and to sign off the guard guarantee that the union achieved elsewhere.SWR will be reap profits from a fares windfall giving them a boost.
According to him South Western Railway feels that they can treat the union and their staff with contempt, however, it was time they changed their attitude and get serious. They should put a team to discuss with the authorities regarding safety, security and access issues.
