Together with its sister airports at Glasgow and Aberdeen, Southampton Airport underwent a comprehensive, quantified and robust evaluation of their occupational health and safety policies, processes and practices. The audit process included documentation review, interviews with senior management, employees and other key stakeholders, together with sampling of operational activities.

Neil Garwood, Managing Director at Southampton Airport, said: “I am delighted with the priority that the airport places on health and safety, and how it has been recognised with the full five stars in our recent British Safety Council audit. This supports our Corporate Social Responsibility matrix which highlighted that health and safety is important both to our local community and to employees within the airport. This fantastic audit outcome highlights that our systems for managing risks to our business are some of the best in class.”

David Parr, Policy and Technical Services Director at the British Safety Council, added: “The award of a five-star grading following our occupational best practice Health and Safety Audit is an outstanding achievement and is reflective of a proactive organisation which is committed to continual improvement in its health and safety arrangements and managing risks to workers’ health, safety and welfare. AGS Airports should be very proud of this achievement.”

The audit measured performance against key health and safety management best practice indicators and a detailed review of over sixty component elements. AGS Airports Limited has become the first airport group in the UK to achieve five stars by the British Safety Council for all three of its airports.
