Southwest Airlines Cuts Workforce to Streamline Operations and Boost Agility

Published on February 18, 2025

Southwest Airlines Co. announced a strategic workforce reduction aimed at streamlining operations and enhancing agility as part of its broader transformation plan.

The airline will reduce approximately 1,750 positions, primarily targeting corporate overhead and leadership roles, which account for roughly 15% of its corporate workforce. This includes the elimination of 11 senior leadership positions at the Vice President level and above, representing 15% of the company’s senior management committee. The restructuring is expected to be largely completed by the end of the second quarter of 2025.

“This decision is unprecedented in our 53-year history, and change requires that we make difficult decisions. We are at a pivotal moment as we transform Southwest Airlines into a leaner, faster, and more agile organization,” said Bob Jordan, President, Chief Executive Officer & Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. “I arrived at this decision thoughtfully and carefully, knowing how hard it will be to say goodbye to colleagues who have been a significant part of our Southwest Culture and accomplishments. I’m grateful to all Southwest Employees who have shared in our legendary history and to those that will guide us into the next era of Southwest Airlines.”

Southwest estimates that these workforce reductions will generate savings of approximately $210 million in 2025 and $300 million annually starting in 2026. However, the company anticipates a one-time charge of $60 million to $80 million in the first quarter of 2025, mainly for severance payments and post-employment benefits, which will be classified as a special item. The final cost will depend on individual employee decisions during the reduction process. Southwest plans to provide updates on additional cost-saving measures throughout 2025.
