Spain set to recover its tourism after experiencing a two-year hiatus

In the spring 2022, Spain hopes to see a tourism boom after a slowdown caused by the new COVID variant and for overall visitor numbers this year. It’s expected to be more than two-thirds of record 2019 levels, a senior government official explained.

“The 2022 expectations are good,” Tourism Secretary Fernando Valdes said on the sidelines of Madrid’s FITUR tourism congress. “What we have is a great desire to travel,” he said.

Back in 2019, according to official figures, Spain was the second most visited country in world with a record 80 million tourists visiting the country the year before COVID-19 struck the world.

In 2021, tourism reached only a third of that number as impediments restricted significant recovery, though that was still about 55% higher than in 2020.

Increasing levels of vaccination and fewer restrictions related to travel permitted international travel to Spain to go up faster in the last quarter of 2021. It went up to 64% of its pre-pandemic levels, even though the spread of the new variant have slowed down the recovery once again.

“The first milestone is Easter week. It will give us a preview of what the rest of the year is going to be like,” Valdes said.
The southern region of Andalusia is all set to have fun on the Easter week in April 2022. During this time, in Spain, we get to witness world-famous processions after seeing two years of cancellation of all festivities across the country, with other regions hoping to recommence their own fiestas such as the San Fermin bull-running festival in Pamplona.

Melia have recently declared that bookings are increasing and tourism authorities are predicting a rise in travel from countries like Britain, Germany, Holland and France during the spring and summer.
