In 2016, number of visitors to Spain hit a new record according to Alvaro Nadal, the Minister for Energy and Tourism. It was the 4th consecutive year with numbers boosted by security concerns in Mediterranean holiday destinations like Turkey and North Africa.
From 2015, the total increased by 9.9% with 75.3 million international visitors, spending 77 billion Euros, 8.3% more than in 2015. The thriving tourism industry of Spain accounts for around 11% of its GDP, employing one in eight people in the workforce. Spain is the third most visited countries of the world, with the tourism sector creating a job surge during the summer months.
