Spanish Tourist Office draws out travel protocols for Canary & Balearic Islands

Tuesday, October 20, 2020

Both the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands have been severely affected by the pandemic as the two regions’ are hugely tourism and airlift dependent. Directly, the travel industry accounts for 35% of GDP in both the regions; with the UK being the chief source market in the Canary Islands and second source market for the Balearic Islands.

However, as long as reliable safety measures are guaranteed, there will always be an appetite to travel to both of these islands whatsoever.

As such, the Spanish Government has signed a contract with the regional governments of the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands on a protocol to set up travel corridors with the countries in the Europe. The agreement has been made to permit travel mobility in order to tourism reactivation in the two Spanish archipelagos without putting the public at jeopardy.

The tourism corridor protocol is a special programme that is based on the execution of steps that will protect public health as well as reduce tourism mobility risks.

Travel Protocols
• Testing
• Quarantine

Additional measures
For tourism arrivals, information and promotion will be facilitated about the contact-tracing app “COVID Radar” as well. By now, this app is available in English, French and German translation services with additional such services of other languages are currently underway. Similarly, enhanced tourist tracing measures will be conducted, as detailed in the SpTH Overseas Health Control Forms.

These steps will make sure that tourism can be reinstated in a safe manner and eradicate fears in source countries regarding overseas travel amongst citizens.
