With places of worship across India reopening, hotels and travel companies are positive regarding their business profiting from spiritual tourism.
Demand for travel is going up in destinations like Shirdi, Vrindavan, Ajmer and Bodh Gaya, among others, with pilgrims booking dates for paying visit to temples and religious cities.
MakeMyTrip, Sarovar Hotels, Indian Hotels Company Ltd. (IHCL) are expecting April-July to be positive months for business for religious tourism across India.
MakeMyTrip said that religious cities like Mathura, Haridwar, Puri, Varanasi and Pushkarare witnessing steady increase in tourists.
PuneetChhatwal, the MD & CEO of the Indian Hotels Company said that spiritual tourism is crisis-resistant unless authorities close these places during a pandemic situation. “It (religious tourism) is a massive business. We are going to launch a Vivanta hotel in Katra soon. We already have a Ginger Hotel there. We have a Ginger in Dwarka (Gujarat) and have opened a Taj in Tirupati as well and all of these have opened during the pandemic,” Chhatwalsaid.
Indians generally opt for weekends/extended weekends for spiritual travel and a significant three-fold increase was witnessed for the long weekend during Holi starting 18 March.
