Sri Lanka is aiming to earn USD four billion profits from the tourism sector this year, said Harin Fernando, the Minister of Lands and Tourism in the island nation.

In the sidelines of the MICE Expo held by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau and Sri Lankan Airlines, Fernando said that the country has already netted approximately USD 330 million and above concerning tourism incomes in the first two months of this year. More than 200,000 arrivals have been registered.

The minister said that this encouraging trend is predicted to continue. Accordingly, Sri Lanka can anticipate getting as much as USD 4 billion from tourism proceeds this year. Fernanado said that Sri Lanka is now experiencing the tourism off season and to make up for the vacuum of European tourists, Sri Lanka at the present is considering the large India and Chinese markets.

Minister Fernando said that India has always remained a profitable market for Sri Lanka, as the top three feeders to the tourism segment of the country and also for the MICE segment.

In the wake of the COVID pandemic, China went through a lockdown; however, the country has now been opened once again, and as a result, high numbers of tourists are probable.

To put up with their growing arrivals, China Eastern Airlines has improved their regularity while SriLankan has also recommenced their flights to China. Fernando said that while entire Sri Lanka cheers the growth of tourism, few politically stirred activists are trying to chase off tourists by forming disputes.
