Sri Lanka likely to strengthen tourist police in 2018

Sri LankaThe government of Sri Lanka mentioned on Tuesday that it would be strengthening its tourist police force in 2018 for the safety and assistance of globetrotters visiting the island nation.


The Law and Order Ministry officials also declared that the government had allocated US$320,000 (Rs. 50 million) to strengthen the police force with a view to make Sri Lanka safer for tourists.


The government had handed over 18 brand new motorbikes and four terrain vehicles to the tourist police on Tuesday.


These vehicles were all offered by the Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake and Tourism Minister John Amaratunga. The government of Sri Lanka mentioned that it would take immediate measures to offer a safe ambiance for tourists arriving in the island country.


Amaratunga who is the Tourism Minister said that the government was anxious about the rising number of complaints of exploitation and harassment of international tourists and promised to take strict action against those who were associated with antisocial activities.


He also went on to add that with tourist arrivals touching record figures in recent years and that the number of complaints has also been steadily increasing.


The tourism sector of Sri Lanka has been impacted heavily once by a 30-year civil conflict. But now it has emerged as a leading foreign exchange earner with a rising number of tourists.
