As an aftermath of the recent deadly terror attacks in Sri Lanka, its tourism industry is reeling under the circumstances. After the Easter Sunday bombings, tourists are cancelling their trips and bookings in great numbers. Sri Lanka’s $4.4 billion tourism industry is feeling the heat from cancellations as travelers turn away from the sun and sand Indian Ocean Island after the multiple suicide bombings killing over 250 people two weeks ago.
Tourism accounts for 5 percent of the country’s gross domestic product, and it has suffered much with tourists from around the world cancelling hotel and flight bookings fearing more attacks.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said in an interview on Saturday, “It’s a big blow to the economy, as well as the tourism industry. For the economy to develop, it’s important tourism return to where it was before the attacks.”
