Sri Lanka trying to attract tourists from India

With the declining of the pandemic and Sri Lanka’s economy needing improvement in the form of tourism income, Colombo is trying to attract tourists from India. A delegation led by Sri Lankan Convention Bureau (SLCB), which is a section of the country’s tourism ministry, has reached India for upholding Sri Lanka as a preferred holiday destination for Indians.


India is a big and lucrative market for Lanka, with almost 21% of overall tourist in the island arriving from the country.


SLCB chairman, Thisum Jayasurya said that Sri Lanka is completely open and looking for tourists. India is a priority market for Sri Lanka, and hence, it is aiming for three categories of tourists – family, entertainment and Ramayana. Sri Lanka is also working out special deals for Indian tourists and also looking forward to tie up with low-priced carriers.


The SLCB delegation is led by Jayasurya. It has already held a roadshow in Delhi. More roadshows are planned in Mumbai and Hyderabad. Jayasurya added that India has always maintained cordial relations with Sri Lanka and they have lots of eagerness and love to visit the island. Therefore, Sri Lanka is ready to welcome Indian tourists.


Jayasurya said that Sri Lanka is targeting one million tourist numbers by the end of this year. Half a million tourists have already visited Sri Lanka till now. Jayasurya said that they are hopeful that a major portion of these tourists would turn up from India.
