Staffs evacuate Christchurch Airport as improvised ‘explosive’ device found in luggage

New Zealand’s Christchurch Airport was evacuated after one airport staff reportedly found a passenger with a ‘bomb’ in their baggage.

The terrifying discovery forced airport staff and travellers out of the terminal building on Thursday morning.

The chaos disrupted dozens of flights in and out of the city.

According to reports available, officers identified apparently an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) at one of the security screening points of the airport.

Flights have now resumed although the site reopened for the public quite some time back.

The incident affected several flights and impacted several hundred passengers.

The terminal has re-opened and people are re-entering.

The New Zealand Herald reports that hundreds of people were standing outside the terminal during the chaos.

A police spokesperson said they were warned about the incident around 8 am.

The domestic terminal was evacuated as a precaution.

Officers are now making enquiries and speaking with two people in relation to the incident.
