When it meets on July 19th, the city council will think about a pair of agreements to be given to the tourism to Travel Superior and the Richard I. Bong Veterans Historical Center.

On Thursday, July 14th the contracts were approved by the Tourism Development Commission of the city.

Around $40,000 grant will be given to the Travel Superior in terms of operational costs, marketing and branding, and payments related to making the Superior-Douglas County Welcome Center usable by the end of 2022. For the grant funds, all expenditures entitled must be spent between Aug. 1 and Dec. 31.

If Travel Superior presents a written demand to the city and tourism development commission, the agreement can be extended no later than 60 days before to the end of the contract.

Around $164,243 would be given to the Bong Center for the whole year to carry on operations and expenses related to marketing this year. The grant amount is approximately what the historical center got before through the city’s hotel/motel taxes.

Each of these grants would pay back expenses incurred on a monthly basis.

Terry Lundberg, chairman of the Bong Center board, said that he was expecting that they could just do it on a quarterly basis or cluster six months together.

As soon as the director and bookkeeper can assess the operating cost that have been incurred already, the director can come in with a quarterly invoice.
