Sydney was plunged into night-like darkness on Friday afternoon as a smoke haze and thunderstorm blocked out the setting sun.

The city was engulfed into darkness by 5 pm on Friday ahead of thunderstorms which travelled towards the coast from western Sydney.

As per Bureau of Meteorology, Storm clouds mixed with smoke from New South Wales bushfires that had settled across the city reduced the effects of the setting sun

Residents shared the images of dark afternoon sky took on their social media accounts

Earlier on Thursday the city of Mildura in southeast Australia was hit by winds reaching up to 40 kilometres per hour around midday as temperatures reached around 40 degrees.

The strong winds created a dust storm which became strong by the same conditions which caused bushfires sweeping across the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland.

Residents are not being able to see in such conditions.

Some of the residents are claiming that the storm is one of the town’s worst in years, while others have said that there has been a recent increase in the number of storms.

The dust is supposed to be the topsoil which has been loosened due to a drought in Australia. Parts of the country haven’t experienced rainfall for a long time and the extreme conditions are said to be associated with climate change.
