The state capital enters into its eighth week of lockdown with a record surge in Covid cases. New South Wales suffered a massive hike in new cases with 466 infections in the last 24 hours. Four deaths recorded on Saturday took the state’s toll to 42 in the outbreak.

The government has planned to increase fines in the country’s most populous state up to $3.700 instantly for flouting lockdown rules or for lying to the contract tracing officials.

The state premier Gladys Berejiklian said that it is the worst situation in New South Wales since day one.

With new Covid cases surging it is unlikely that the country will end its lockdown on August 28 as the government planned earlier.

In a news conference, Berejiklian stated that this is the nature of the Delta variant but this too shall pass.

He also warned the countrymen that September and October are going to be difficult for everyone.

Hundreds of more defense personnel will be deployed to Sydney next week to help enforce the lockdown laws. Several other cities are also in lockdown due to the rampant outbreak of the virus.

The government has enforced a fine of $2,210 to people entering the regional areas without an official permit. Earlier breaches of public health state orders resulted in a fine of $737.

Despite its intermittent outbreaks, Australia, however, has till far lower Covid cases than it is in many developed contrived of the world.

Australia records a total of 38,600 cases and 952 deaths till date.
