Ocean swells should begin affecting the northern Leeward Islands by early Friday, causing life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Forecasters say dry air, Saharan dust and wind shear have been among the reasons there haven’t been more storms this year.

The National Hurricane Center has classified the storm in the Gulf as Potential Tropical Cyclone One.
