Taiwan DIY plants keep tourism thriving

Once thought to be the “factory of the world”, Taiwan is optimistic that its industrial tourism inventiveness will inspire some factories to keep their processes local rather than adhering to the international drift of moving to China or Southeast Asia, where the cost of land and labor are quite low.

Taiwan’s 20-year struggle has brought in more than 150 government-approved “tourism factories” and “manufacturing culture centers”, and up to 100 additional self-governing examples. Tourists who are interested can visit museums for shoes, suitcases, robots, pencils, and even condoms, and return to their countries with a DIY product to reminisce their visit.

The expectation is that a better prominence on service – rather than just manufacture – will shape a robust brand allegiance and faith in Taiwanese companies in a progressively competitive global market.

Susan Lin, a professor of museum studies at Fu Jen University said that it is a sustainable idea. The concept of travel factories is to modernize, not to build up. With tourism factories, one can tutor people regarding the process of creating your products. For example, they can learn how to preserve food, and that it is healthy and safe.

Taiwan’s SMEs are often family-owned and functioned. They produce a bulk of Taiwan’s exports and are experts at distributing merchandises and parts to foreign firms at competitive charges.
