From upgrading tourism destinations and framing new guidelines for luring youngsters to visit tourist spots across Tamil Nadu, the statetourism department has come up with several plans, said Minister M. Mathiventhan. With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting the tourism sector harshly,the Minister said that efforts are being made to increase footfall and recover the economy around tourist destinations.
The minister said that the Island Grounds in Chennai would be developed into a mega event destination for the whole year, and infrastructure would be advancedspending Rs.10 crore. The drive-in restaurant would get a facelift and would be upgraded into a multi-cuisine restaurant with outdoor dining, open-air theater, barbecue counter and a cafeteria at an estimated cost of Rs. 50 lakh. The food and beverages business of the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) would be developed as a separate vertical with proper branding, and would be improved as an independent profit center. TTDC would also start a chain of fast food kiosks with the brand name ‘Quick Bites’ at Vandalur, Kovalam and Yercaud.
“TTDC will take steps to increase the number of ‘Seegra Darshan’ tickets from 150 to 1,000 for the Tirupati tour package, in consultation with Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams,” said the Minister.
The state tourism department is also planning to set up caravan parks at two tourist destinations costing Rs. 30 lakh.
