Preparations are being made in Tauranga for the first cruise ship to visit New Zealand for the highly anticipated 2022/2023 season.
The Majestic Princess is scheduled to dock in Tauranga at 6.30am on October 15.
Tāpoi Te Moananui ā Toi/Tourism Bay of Plenty tumuaki/general manager Oscar Nathan says they are delighted that Tauranga has the honour of being the first port to host the first cruise ship for the season.
The Majestic Princess will be docking in Tauranga at 6.30am on Saturday, October 15, and will depart at 5.30pm the same day.
It will be carrying 3560 passengers and the voyage will then carry on to Auckland and the Bay of Islands.
Oscar says this arrival is “incredibly significant for our tourism sector and economy.
New Zealand shut its borders back in 2020 when COVID-19 first spread through the world.
Since then, the government has opened up the country in stages, with the last of the five COVID-19 border reopening phases happened at 11.59pm on Sunday, July 31, – this was the opening of the maritime border.
Oscar says businesses that are primarily focused on the cruise passenger market are busy gearing up for the return of these impressive vessels.
They are expecting to welcome 103 cruise ships to our region during the coming season.
They know that local transport businesses, tour operators, visitor attractions and retailers are eagerly anticipating the high-value patronage these cruise passengers will bring.
They are sure many of our residents will also be looking forward to watching the Majestic Princess’s arrival or departure from one of the many vantage points around the city.
It will be tangible proof that Tauranga is finally fully reconnecting with international visitors.
