Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands, is a popular international travel and tourism destination in Spain. Concerns, however, exist about cyber security.

The first of its kind to be adopted by a Spanish destination, Tenerife Tourism is in the midst of putting into action the island’s Cybersecurity Tourism Master Plan (PDTC), which will boost the cybersecurity of the travel and tourism industry. Jobs in cyber security for tourism increased worldwide by 54% last week, and Tenerife is no exception.

The tourism board detailed the plan’s advantages and how the business sector will profit as a result of ongoing digital threats after last week’s meeting.

The conference was attended by the CEO of Tenerife Tourism, David Pérez; the head of the strategic sector of Tourism and Leisure of the National Institute of Cybersecurity (INCIBE), Marco Antonio Lozano; and cybersecurity specialist and CEO of Hakron, Igor Lukic.

The hotel sector was represented by the general manager of Spring Hotels Groups, Miguel Villarroya; the CEO of Hotel Urban Anaga, Olga Cabrera; and the director of information security at NH Hoteles, Nuria Lago.

The Plan intends to develop a tourism and technological ecosystem that benefits businesses that offer visitors technical and legal protection in the online environment. In order to achieve this, it considers continuously assessing businesses to find weaknesses in their services and applications.

The primary goals of the conference were to inform businesses of the value of signing up for the plan and to forewarn them about the digital dangers to which their industry is vulnerable by presenting examples from real-world situations.

There are 17 initiatives in the plan, and they will be developed over a four-year period. The island’s cybersecurity for the tourism industry will also be governed by a Technical Office of Tourist Cybersecurity, which will be run by Tourism of Tenerife.

The Plan’s initial phase calls for the establishment of a technical and advisory committee to handle reputational crises of the travel destination brought on by cybersecurity incidents, the creation of an advisory programme for SMEs with the Chamber of Commerce, and the promotion of ICT skills programmes for the improvement of employment related to cybersecurity in conjunction with the University of La Laguna and vocational training centres.

A system for evaluating digital maturity will be developed, plans for cybersecurity training and technical awareness will be created, and the island will be marketed as a destination for cybersecurity in the second year.

Third, Tenerife Smart Destination projects would be promoted along with market and advisory research on technical equipment.

In the fourth year, the goal is to completely standardise the implementation of each line of action, solidifying the growth and continuity of all lines of action.
