Eighteen people, including seven children were a bit injured. Three others were suffering from ‘apparent wounds’, as specified by the Taiwan Strait Tourism Association.
The top of the bus had been carrying 28 people.
Suddenly, it end up hitting the top portion of a tunnel around 10.04 a.m., immediately after the driver took a wrong turn. There were 25 tourists and also a tour leader from east China’s Zhejiang Province. Also, a tour guide and a bus driver were present who were both from Taiwan.
The tour leader has stayed back in the hospital for the purpose of further treatment.
On the other hand, others have been able to return to the hotels, as revealed by one of the travel agencies. This was the mainland tour group in Taiwan.
Probably, the accident might have been caused when the driver underestimated the height of the bus, according to Kaohsing authorities. He also added that the authorities are conducting further investigation at present.
The bus driver told the media that he was actually distracted while discussing the travel schedule with the Taiwan tourist guide.
Consequently, he veered in the wrong direction.
The tour guide suffered bruises on his forehead and hands, while the driver was unhurt.
The travel agency said that the journey would continue until today as has been scheduled.
The Kaohsiung accident comes after a ghastly suicide last year in which 24 tourists from mainland China were killed in Taiwan. This happened after the driver had set the moving bus on fire.
The National Tourism Bureau said that it had been paying attention to this unfortunate incident and would make way for tougher safeguards for mainland tourists.
