The Thailand government needs to speed up providing assistance to groups that are badly affected by Covid-19, like hotel operators in Phuket.
At a forum arranged by the Foundation for Labour and Employment Promotion, Kiriya Kulkolkran, a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics Thammasat University, said that the number of foreign tourists in Thailand has decreased by 80% to eight million from 40 million. He said that the impacts of the pandemic on the tourism sector would continue for more than three years.
Working people in the supply chain, especially the new graduates and those starting their jobs would feel the impacts of the pandemic more, Kulkolkran said.
Although tourism businesses restarted in September with overall situation improving, their revenue has not yet returned to usual levels.
Only 4% of the businesses reported earning the same or more than before the pandemic.
It might take a long time for the tourism sector to bounce back to normal levels. Kulkolkran suggested that the Thai government should provide personalized assistance for affected businesses, especially the hotel operators in Phuket whose main customers are foreigners.
President of Homenet Thailand, Manop Kaewphaka, urged the Thai government to provide financial aid permitting foreign tourists to enter the country.
Anchisa Sirinanthasak, 52, an employee of a hotel in Phuket, supported a co-payment project for hotel employees to thwart unemployment in the sector.
