Last month, Thailand received more than 1,000 foreign tourists, which is the first set of visitors in the country in six months.
Tourists started coming back in small numbers under a special long-stay tourist visa launched by the Thai government last month, as per data released by Thailand’s tourism ministry. Thailand has eased most of its corona virus measures for permitting businesses to fully reopen and some visitors to return. It has, however, maintained a countrywide state of emergency for restricting reappearance of the pandemic. Thailand’s ailing tourism industry is struggling to attract visitors as authorities have kept mandatory 14-day quarantine on arrival in place in the midst of a surge in confirmed infections globally.
The tourism ministry didn’t specify regarding revenue generated from foreign visitors. Thailand witnessed more than $60 billion in revenue from about 40 million visitors in 2019.
