Thailand’s tourism strategy is undergoing a significant transformation as the country pivots from promoting low-cost travel packages to targeting high-value visitors. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is actively steering the nation’s tourism efforts toward luxury, wellness, and sustainable travel experiences. This strategic shift was clearly evident at ITB Asia in Singapore, where the country’s new direction was highlighted through its pavilion and the companies it showcased.
TAT’s New Direction: Showcasing Excellence and Innovation
Leading the charge at ITB Asia, TAT’s delegation featured 22 top Thai tourism operators, all committed to showcasing Thailand’s top-tier offerings. The delegation was a carefully selected mix of winners from the prestigious Thailand Tourism Awards, including renowned establishments like Carlton Hotel Bangkok Sukhumvit, Cross Hotels and Resorts, Jurassic World: The Experience, Melati Beach Resort and Spa, and Red Mountain Golf Club, to name just a few.
Among the exhibitors were also sustainable hotels, members of TAT’s CF-Hotels initiative, such as Ambassador Hotel Bangkok, Dara Samui Beach Resort, and Panan Krabi Resort. Other notable participants included high-end resorts and operators such as Amatara Welleisure™ Resort Phuket, Avani+ Khao Lak Resort Phang Nga, and Pullman Bangkok King Power. Thai Airways International, along with luxury service providers like Thailand Privilege Card Co., Ltd., also joined in to highlight the nation’s offerings tailored for upscale visitors.

A Focus on Wellness and Sustainability
Thailand’s updated tourism product development is now placing a strong emphasis on sustainability and wellness. As part of this shift, TAT is working to align with international standards for sustainable tourism, particularly those established by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council. Despite the promising direction, a challenge remains: 80% of operators are still hesitant to implement sustainable practices, mainly due to the higher investment required.
Nevertheless, TAT projects substantial growth in health and wellness tourism, expecting it to generate up to 124 billion baht ($3.3 billion) in 2025, with a surge in the segment already evident in the first half of the year. In the coming years, this revenue could rise further to 140–150 billion baht, with health tourism potentially reaching pre-pandemic levels.
A significant driver of this growth is the country’s robust medical tourism infrastructure, which includes 61 hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and over 500 clinics dedicated to international patients. The average health tourist spends approximately 107,662 baht ($2,900) per trip—more than double the average expenditure of general tourists—making it a highly lucrative sector. Health tourists also tend to stay longer, averaging about 13 nights.
Thailand’s ability to offer affordable healthcare remains a competitive advantage. Healthcare costs are still 30–70% lower than in Western nations and 30–50% cheaper than in Singapore, which further boosts its appeal to international medical tourists.
Expanding Thailand’s Ultra-Luxury and Sports Tourism
To attract ultra-luxury travelers, TAT is expanding its focus to include exclusive, high-end experiences. One standout offering is the vintage car city tour in Bangkok, which has been launched in collaboration with TAT’s Prague office. Priced between 100,000 and 150,000 baht ($2,700–$4,100) per person, the tour offers a bespoke, lavish experience that has proven to be a success, particularly among Chinese and European tourists.
TAT is also looking to strengthen Thailand’s position as a sports tourism hub, with events like the Amazing Thailand Marathon drawing attention from international runners. This initiative highlights Thailand’s suitability as a top destination for trail running and other sports tourism, which typically attracts athletes who stay for extended periods of training, sometimes up to two weeks. The country’s natural landscapes and diverse offerings make it a prime location for such niche tourism.
