Thailand’s tourism businesses are fighting hard to stay afloat and increase the number of foreign visitors to the kingdom by removing the impediments right away. Chamnan Srisawat from the Tourism Council of Thailand is thinking in this line, who says that the Omicron variant together with Russia’s war on Ukraine, has hit a massive blow to the sector.

A TCT poll that surveyed 200 overseas travellers discovered that 71% agreed on PCR test on arrival is highly awkward.

Chamnan explains that if the tourism of Thailand is to stay alive, in 2022, it needs to retain 40% of its 2019 level of business which is 1.2 trillion baht in revenue, from 16 million tourists and 75 million domestic trips. He also mentions that in order to attain this level, the onerous Thailand Pass registration process and PCR testing on arrival should be removed. TCT’s tourism confidence index during the first quarter of 2022 stood at 44, as per the Bangkok Post report which was a major development from 36 during the same time last year. However, it’s still down from 47 during the last quarter of 2021. In the survey, 740 tourism operators took part and its findings show nightlife operators have the lowest confidence who have been severely affected by the pandemic restrictions. The confidence level among those businesses is at 20, down from 41 during the same period in 2021.
