The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain Land becomes a World Heritage Site

This morning, the 42nd session of the World Heritage Committee has declared that the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain Land in Mpumalanga will get a place on the World Heritage List this year, reports Lowvelder.

 
The inscription of sites will continue this afternoon. The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountain Land has offered an unparalleled source of scientific information on the creation of the early earth from 3.6 billion years back. Along with their outstanding geology, the area is rich in wild plants, animals and beautiful scenery.

 
Many large and small nature reserves along with panoramic beauty provide the main elements required for developing diverse and pioneering tourism partnerships and businesses like adventure tourism, geological, birding, game viewing, historical and cultural tours, hiking and off-road trails.

 
Thus, a first World Heritage Site in Mpumalanga will provide an important global marketing boost up for tourism in the region.
