Councillors of Valparai Municipality have recently requested the local body to take immediate actions to progress with the boat house project, with the intent of drawing more tourists to this exotic hill town.

C. Veeramani, a ward councillor, said that for tourists who come from the plain area, the Boat House can turn out to be an important draw during the weekends. The responsibility lies on the local body to resolve their issues with the Public Works Department and complete the impending project that has got stopped in the mid-way.

The government under the earlier rule had agreed to provide Rs. 2.5 crore to build a boat house on a 4.25 acre site located close to the Municipal Inspection Bungalow. However, so far, only the earth work has got over. Water diversion work from a channel branching out of Nadumalai River to the check-dam has not been done because of the oppositions raised by Public Works Department.

Also, the councillors have learnt to request the local body to adopt measures for the renewal of ‘Kodai Vizha’, a three-day summer festival which is arranged in the month of May to improve tourism.

This festival comprises games, food festivals, flower shows and folk and tribal presentations. Just few years back, this festival was discontinued by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation.

As the major part of the population comprise tea and coffee labourers, the revenue can only be generated through ticket sales.
