Technology’s role in tourism in making it even more sustainable and powerful was the main aim of the 9th edition of the Sharjah International Tourism and Travel Forum 2022 discussion panel titled ‘Emerging Niches in Technology & Architecture’, arranged by the Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority at the Sharjah Expo Centre.

Dr. Jerry Kolo, Professor of Urban Planning & Programme Academic Coordinator, MUP, in the discussion mentioned that even though Sharjah is famous for its hospitality sector, at times it’s not always that uncomplicated to get this message across to the world. He stated that having powerful and flexible tourism and developing experiential travel to the city was necessary to set up a sector that’s sustainable.

Growing on this, he mentioned that tourist’s emotional and social intelligence had altered in all these years over the years and even though technology has assisted to make things seamless and at times have made things even more exciting for travelers. The bottom line was recognizing the roles of the stakeholders, playing to their strengths and providing them with an experience that encouraged spending and creating a desire to return.

The Assistant Director of Support Service for IT at Sharjah International Airport Authority, Eng. Aisha Obaid Almheiri, said that in tourism, technology had played a major role particularly in a world, post-pandemic. She said that people in the early 2000’s, travelling back could never have imagined being able to use “self-check in” mobile apps to make bookings and other things.
