Manipur tourism festival kick-starts with major lavishness

The biggest tourism festival in Manipur, the Manipur Sangai festival has started and inaugurated on Monday, followed by pomp and extravagant event after remaining closed for two years due to Covid-induced brief hiatus.


This 10-day-long festival was its 11th edition this year and was inaugurated by G Kishan Reddy, the Union Tourism Minister at Moirang Khunou in Bishnupur district. This year’s theme – ‘Festival of Oneness’.


W Ibohal, Manipur Tourism director, said that the edition for this year will be the biggest as the setting up of the festival back in 2010. As contrasting to the past, this year, the Sangai festival will be arranged in 13 venues all over six districts.


The tourism director said that the star attraction of the festival was the opening ceremony at the Sangai Ethnic Park situated in Moirang Khunou. It is known to house indigenous tribal huts, emphasizing Manipur’s varied ethnic communities and the magnificence of original handloom which highlights the rich artistic heritage passed over through all these years.


Besides, in the said festival, there will be cultural performances on a regular basis by artists from various Manipuri tribes and all over India, in addition to the foreign artists and cultural troupes at the Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre where on 30th Nov, the closing ceremony will be held. The commissioner of the Manipur Tourism department, PK Jha, said that the target for this year is to double the attendee number in the last edition of this festival.
