A draft safety protocol for the cruise industry is in the pipeline, attendees were told at the event chaired by Dubai Tourism director General Helal Saeed Almarri and P&O Marinas chief executive Mohammed Al Mannaei and executive director, Mina Rashid.

In a general discussion regarding the state of the tourism industry in Dubai, attendees heard that strict safety protocols are now in place at hotels and other tourism touch-points across the city.

The city has recently launched a ‘Dubai Assurance’ stamp, a visual identity that certifies that establishments are adhering to health and safety protocols. The compliance programme is also applicable to the cruise sector.

Mr Almarri said “The precautionary measures and safety protocols that are being formulated for cruise tourism will be implemented when cruise ships arrive in Dubai during the forthcoming season. We can assure cruise tourists of the highest global safety standards at every stage of their travel journey from the time they disembark in Dubai to the point they depart from our cruise terminals.”

Emirates Airlines chief commercial officer Adnan Kazim said the airline is backing the cruise sector and weekly services will be ramped up. In Europe, which is the main source of Dubai’s cruise tourism and where Emirates currently serves 24 destinations, the airline plans to scale this up to 26 this month with an eye toward further expansion.

Mr Kazim said “In terms of safety and health on board we have taken all required measures. The message is that we are back proficiently to business.”
