Recently, the Tourism Authority of Kiribati has welcomed the announcement of Kiribati President Taneti Maamau on his decision to reopen Kiribati national borders from January 2022.

President Maamau in his announcement has requested people who meet the criteria for the Covid-19 vaccines to complete their doses before the end of 2021. He has also said that unity and obeying the restrictions and regulations is crucial for the safety of all I-Kiribati. The President has requested old men and women organizations, church groups, youth groups, women organizations, Islands Councils, communities and fathers and mothers in every household to assist family members as well as friends to get vaccinated against COVID.

The Tourism Authority of Kiribati or TAK through its Tourism Restart Program for the New Normal has developed Kiribati Tourism & Hospitality Protocols and is undertaking Covid-19 safety protocol training at present for all accommodation providers. Properties in South Tarawa, North Tarawa, Abaiang, Tab North and Tab South have completed their training as the rest of the providers of accommodation and tourism services in other islands will receive their Covid-19 protocol training by November 2021. TAK CEO Petero Manufolau has affirmed that industry-wide refresher training will take place on December 2021, before the border reopening starts in January 2022.

TAK in September, as part of its restart program will also be launching its digital marketing strategy from October 2021, giving the Pacific Island destination three months to kick-start its campaigns and programs related to marketing.
