The tourism economy of Portugal is enjoying a strong bounce back followed by the raise of international travel restrictions. For February, visitor numbers increased by 500 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
Accommodation facilities received 1.2 million guests in February, representing a rise of 507 per cent, as per the data published by the Portuguese Statistics Institute (INE). Visitors spent 2.9 million overnight stays with a 527.1 per cent rise.
For February 2022, the increasing tourism rates have surpassed those of January when hikes of 182.3 per cent in guests and 185 per cent in overnight stays.
However, in Portugal, tourism levels still lags behind, especially in February 2020, when no restrictions related to COVID-19 was imposed.
In January, the total revenue of the industry was €106.4 million with 71.4 per cent or €76 million coming from accommodation. When a comparison was made with January 2020, total revenue declined by 39.1 per cent, and revenue from accommodation dropped by 38.8 per cent.
