The tourism minister of South Africa has approached the National Treasury for added financial help for a marketing campaign that would help in drawing foreign tourists as well as perk up an industry that is damaged by the lockdowns due to the pandemic. This initiation comes as the country is all set to reopen its international borders which were closed down since March 2020.

From Oct. 1st, business and leisure travel will be permitted, even though entry may not be allowed to people from countries which have high rates of infection. Diplomatic discussions are in progress to make sure that the visitors obey the strict health rules and the countries whose citizens have been given access reciprocate and allow South Africans to enter, Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane said in an interview on Thursday.

To quote her, “We will have to be aggressive in our marketing campaigns. We have approached Treasury already in terms of our revising our budget and are awaiting its response.”The Treasury will assess spending allocations in its medium-term budget policy statement that is expected to be unveiled in Oct 2020. It will be short of additional funding as the lockdown brought the economy to an almost stand still and eroded tax revenue.

In South Africa, the number of cases of coronavirus infections, deaths and hospital admissions has dropped in spite of a phased reopening of the economy, which encouraged deciding on reopening the borders. International travelers will have to produce a negative Covid-19 test report, not more than 72 hours old, or face mandatory quarantine, President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a televised address on Tuesday.
