The tourism of North Queensland hopes to encounter more job losses

The tourism operators of North Queensland anticipate that thousands of jobs to go by the end of 2021, as per research from the Tourism and Transport Forum.

In the past, the industry supported 15,750 full and part-time staff in the Cairns region before COVID however as of July 2021, almost 3600 permanent staff has lost their job with an additional 3000 expected in the coming months.

All over Australia, lockdowns have sabotaged the temporary emergence of the region in 2020 when visitors turned Cairns the most sought-after flight destination late in 2020.

Mark Olsen from Tourism Tropical North Queensland have explained that the loss of commonwealth support and persistent lockdowns continue to damage an industry that was once super thriving!

To quote the CEO, “The region grew its workforce across the entire supply chain ready for a busy winter, but now these new recruits, including more than 200 from the tourism industry, who have been in training for months are being told to find other work.”

“Government needs to understand how significant this impact will be on our community where one in five jobs have depended on tourism.”

Mr. Olsen has explained that Tropical North Queensland in Australia will remain one of the most impacted regions, labeling the tourism industry’s outlook as “grim”.
