The UNWTO developing protocols to assist countries in opening their borders to foreign travelers

Published on : Tuesday, May 19, 2020

The UNWTO is coming up with protocols that will assist countries in opening their borders to foreign travelers. This has been said in a statement by the organization’s Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili.

The UNWTO is developing a Home-to-Home document, which would make sure that tourists do not contract COVID-19 while traveling. All 159 member countries of the UNWTO that aim to open borders for tourists need to adhere to the protocol.

The protocol should completely formalize traveler behavior so that they do not become infected with corona virus. The document will point out which taxi tourists can ride on, how to take seats on airplanes, what hygiene standards need to be followed in hotels, how to behave in museums, and go on public excursions.

Also, the UNWTO proposes to issue COVID passports, which will indicate when a person has had a corona virus. It can also enter data regarding well-being of the traveler.

Tourism is one of the most affected sectors by the corona virus pandemic, with borders of most countries globally closed. International and domestic tourism has come to a complete halt.
