A total of 630 winter service employees at Munich Airport are on standby around the clock to ensure safe flight operations in snowy and icy conditions. In January 2022 alone, the busiest month of the current winter season, winter services had to be called out on 21 days. Since October 15 – the start of the current season – there have been a total of 43 days.

The two runways were cleared a total of 46 times and de-iced 26 times – in January, there were 21 runway clearances and 12 de-icings. In total, Flughafen München GmbH (FMG) employees and external workers spent 46,000 working hours with 181 vehicles on the airport’s runways, taxiways, aprons and public areas. To date, FMG’s winter services have used 180 tons of quartz sand, 80 tons of de-icing granules and 1,750 tons of liquid de-icing agent.

EFM, the subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and FMG, responsible for de-icing aircraft, has had to de-ice around 4,800 aircraft since the start of the season, with around 2,000 in January alone.
