The Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association recently said that business is strong and it’s slowly moving into the spring and summer months, however, the tough times around the labour market continue.

Ellen Walker-Matthews, TOTA CEO, says that issues related to staffing will probably continue for a long time.

Ellen said that staffing and housing… so if they can acquire employees there are very few places for them to lease, so that is a compounding issue. They are known as an example in Kamloops, last week; Rocky Mountaineer had bought a motel. When they are going through that area, in that place they are going to put their staff. Those are some of the results that operators are coming up with to accommodate the staff that they have, she said.

The number needed in tourism across the country, as per HR Canada, for the summer 2023 is around 356,000 employees.

At present, Walker-Mathews say that in the sector, country has 115,000 employees to fill the jobs.
Many of those jobs are in B.C. That is a Canadian data; however, they know that in this region that is a big part of their challenges.

In majority of cities all over the region, metrics related to tourism are back to the levels of 2019.
She said that they don’t get as much foreign travel as their counterparts.
