Three dead after 6.4 magnitude quake hits Albania

A 6.4 magnitude quake hit Albania at 3:54 am causing several buildings to collapse and leaving three people dead and many injured.

 

 

The tremor was felt across hundreds of miles of Eastern Europe. So far 150 have been reportedly injured in the quake, which is touted the biggest quake so far to hit Albania in decades. The quake has damaged buildings and left people trapped in the rubble and sparked panic among residents.

 

 

Locals ran into panic in Albanian capital Tirana soon after tremors were felt.

 

 

Authorities were on their toes this morning to rescue victims from piles of rubble left by the 6.4-magnitude quake.

 

 

The epicentre was around 20 miles west of Tirana, between the coastal town of Durres and the city of Thuman, both of which have experienced severe damage.

 

 

While one man has died jumping from a collapsing building in Kurbin and two more are feared dead in Lezha. At least 150 people are admitted in a hospital.

 

 

The tremors were felt across hundreds of miles of Eastern Europe.  Residents were found rushing from shaking buildings and some holding babies in their arms.

 

 

A four-storey hotel Mira Mare in Durres has been destroyed in the quake.

 

 

 

Earlier the US Geological Survey cautioned that an earthquake of this size had the potential to cause huge damage and casualties.

 

 

 

Many buildings have got damaged with fallen masonry piled in streets. Tremors were also felt in the Macedonian capital Skopje, 100 miles northeast of the epicentre of Durres.

 

 

 

Locals said that they woke up to see entire bedroom shaking in the middle of the night.

 

 

 

Computer predictions from the USGS show that approximately 8,000 people have felt tremors today and almost 12 million have felt it in countries including Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo and North Macedonia.

 

 

 

An aftershock of around 5.4-magnitude shook the area minutes after the main tremor and minor quakes were rattling the region through the early hours.
