To boost tourism, Thailand introduces ‘yacht quarantine’ plan

Published on : Wednesday, March 10, 2021

Following on from a pilot scheme at first declared in November, roughly 100 yachts are currently hoped to participate in the program, which is at present taking place in Phuket. Travelers will have to wear a smart wristband that will monitor their location and temperature as well as blood pressure. Within a 10km radius, this watch can transmit information at sea as well.

On the program, the Digital Economy Promotion Agency or Depa is working together with mobile operator Advanced Info Service, tourism operators in Phuket and a local tech startup. Members of the Royal Thai Navy will check and track the boats. When visitors will complete their 14-day quarantine, they’ll be allowed to moor at a dock in Phuket and enter the island.

Thailand depends on tourism heavily and in 2020, Phuket lost revenue of over 320 billion baht ($10.407m) due to the pandemic. This happened as visitors were not permitted to enter the island. Thailand is hopeful that to the country, this effort will help bring 1.8 billion baht ($58m) in revenue, which has slowly been opening its international borders since October 2020
Already, Thailand has launched”golf quarantine”. Here, travelers can stay in a golf resort for the quarantine period. However, they’ll have to stay in their rooms for the first three days and then take a COVID-19 test. If the test report comes negative, golfers are then free to play golf with their group and make use of all resort. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has reported that the first group of golfers has finished their quarantine period. Now, they can travel around the country.

The country’s tourism minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, is also planning for travelers to take on their mandatory 14-day quarantine period in all the popular tourist areas, including beach resorts. After the first three days, in this proposal, travelers will be allowed to leave their hotel rooms, but they must not leave their hotel for 11 more days. The plan is expected to start in April or May in popular provinces including Phuket, Krabi and Chiang Mai.
