From April 13th to 16th, the government of Puducherry will host a four-day beach festival, said K Lakshminarayanan, public works minister, who holds the portfolio of tourism.

Yesterday, Lakshminarayanan told the reporters that the festival would feature cultural programmes, water sports activities, western music and dance, catamaran race, bicycle marathon, kite flying, volleyball tournament, seafood gourmet, sunrise seafood tour and fashion show among many others. It would be arranged at the Gandhi Statue beach promenade, Gandhi Thidal craft bazaar, Chunnambar water sports complex, Paradise beach, sand dunes beach and Pondy Maria Beach.

The minister is quite hopeful that the beach festival would not only draw tourists successfully to Puducherry but would also generate good amount of revenue for the territory. He stated that necessary campaigns would be introduced by the government to promote the beach festival.

Lakshminarayanan said in India, Puducherry has been rated as one of the top weekend tourist destinations. During the weekends, tourists from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu visit Puducherry. The minister explained that the government at present proposed to make Puducherry a tourist destination for weekdays as well.

“Many infrastructure facilities have been created over the years, particularly on the beach — Pondy Marina at Vamba Keerapalayam, Sand dunes beach at Pudukuppam, Paradise beach and Ruby beach at Veerampattinam and Eden beach at Chinna Veerampattinam to extend the tourists’ staying time in the town.”
