To ramp up tourism, the sector has to put lot of efforts

The travel sector that got massively impacted is mixing up to get new buses, cars, and workers to prepare them for an arrival of huge number of visitors and experiences several obstructions on the revival path.

At the end of next month, the borders are reopening to all visitors fully. However, the $41 billion industry is currently a silhouette of its earlier self. Numerous operators of small stature have failed to stay afloat with closed borders and endless lockdowns.

The ones who are still in business or giving it another try, for the peak summer season, they will probably find it quite tricky to ramp up in time, keeping in mind shortage of campervans, rental cars, bus drivers and staff members to bring the businesses of tourism out of sleepy period.

Rebecca Ingram, Tourism Industry Aotearoa chief executive, explained that the industry nevertheless never hoped to bounce back so fast, which would give extra time to businesses to rebuild. The chief said that they are definitely not expecting to get back to the level of 2019. It will take two to three year’s time before they think they can find the new normal.

In the 12 months to February 2020, New Zealand received 3.9 million visitors. In this time, Covid-19 was declared pandemic and international borders were shut down. Travel came to a complete halt.

Ben McFadgen, Bus and Coach Association chief executive stated that tourism was 60% of what it was prior to COVID-19, the number of operators getting half of the number and coaches getting decreased to 1200 from 2000.
