After experiencing an uninteresting winter, huge numbers of tourists were seen rushing to Shimla, the Queen of Hills, in the last few months of this year. From Punjab, Delhi, NCR, Haryana and Rajasthan, over 20,000 vehicles along with tourists entered the state capital on the weekends.
As the rush of tourists increase, issue related to occupancy pops up. Hotels and homestays situated in all the hotspots reported full occupancy. The prominent hill stations, like Dharamshala, Shimla, Manali and Dalhousie experienced full to capacity.
From the entry points at Shoghi and Ganahatti, more than 20,000 vehicles of both the locals as well as tourists entered Shimla few months back, said superintendent of police Sanjeev Gandhi. They have deputed extra police force to control Shimla’s traffic, he added.
Also, the huge rush of tourists has led to destruction of traffic in the hill stations. On Friday it was moderate. On weekends, huge number of tourist’s vehicles entering the town, said hotelier Mukesh. The hotel industry in Shimla had hit the rock as less snowfall in 2022-2023 has dropped down the tourist footfall.
From November 2022 to January 2023, the peak winter season, the hotel occupancy in Shimla floated between 30 to 40%. This time, the town experienced only 6 centimeters of snowfall during the entire winter season of 2022-2023. For the hospitality sector, the winter has not been good so far.
