Tomorrow, the Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Craft Village will reopen

Tomorrow, the Sargaalaya Kerala Arts and Craft Village located at Iringal close to Vatakara will reopen after experiencing long-drawn-out lockdown due to COVID-19.

Kerala’s one of the most preferred tourism destinations, Sargaalaya, will restart its operations in a full-fledged manner in the coming days, CEO P.P. Bhaskaran said. The protocols of COVID-19 will be followed strictly during the visiting hours; from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For some time, Sargaalaya was a COVID-19 care centre. It delayed its reopening even when other destinations in Kerala were opened.

Sargaalaya has been the winner of the national honor for the best village tourism project and grabbed the South Asia Travel Award twice. Also, Sargaalaya is known for its activities based on responsible tourism, bringing the best opportunities for traditional artisans in Kerala under the limelight and outside. The Village, handled by the Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society for Kerala Tourism Department, endorses conventional arts and crafts by offering the artisans a permanent space to stay, create, display as well as sell their products to the world. In December and January, the annual fair is conducted and attracts crowds countrywide and abroad.

Inside the Village, the cottages exhibit handicrafts comprising terracotta mural, terracotta jewellery, woodcraft, sculptures of metal, concrete and clay, paintings, dry flower, sea shells, seed crafts, ornaments and handloom products. Also, coconut stem, coconut shell, coconut fibre, cane, bamboo, screw pine, hay, sisal fibre and leather made home decor, along with many useful home appliances and furniture including clay utensils, office furniture, bamboo products, and textiles are also on display. Also, the visitors can watch the craftsman’s live demonstrations. In the Village, pedal boating and speed boating are some of the other attractions to enjoy.
