Tourism around the Mediterranean is prospering again

Tourism around the Mediterranean is thriving once again. Weeklong holidays around some of the less popular Greek islands are fully booked through October.

When Stelios Zompanakis left his job at Greece’s central bank to pursue boat racing, friends and family urged him to think over his decision. Nine years later, he spends summers on the “Ikigai,” which is a 53-foot yacht that he named after the Japanese idea of discovering happiness through a life of meaning.

Weeklong holiday excursions on his yacht around some of the less popular Greek islands — Milos, Sifnos, Serifos, Kythnos among others are all booked up for October.

Zompanakis said that the demand is crazy beyond doubt.

Tourism around the Mediterranean is truly flourishing. Backed by a strong U.S. dollar and Europeans’ repressed demand for locating a beach after years of COVID-19 travel constraints, it has proved to be a stronger rebound from the pandemic collapse than anticipated. This has led to long queues, canceled flights and lost baggage this summer at many European airports, although not in Greece.
