Tourism back on track in Sikkim after lockdown dismissal

Tourism industry is the backbone of Sikkim’s economy.The industry is once again back on its feet with the taking away of the COVID 19-induced lockdown late last year.


Tourism department records say that as many as 3.08 lakh domestic travelers visited Sikkim between October last year and March this year. January was the most lucrative month for the stakeholders involved in the sector with 98,456 visitors.


There has been a hugedevelopment of the tourism industry with aninflux ofenormous number of visitors from around the country since late last year after the lockdown wasdismissed by the Sikkim government.


Regarding the footfall of foreign tourists, 6,055 people visited Sikkim during the period, said a tourism official.


In 2019, Sikkim witnessed around 16 lakh tourist entrances. Numbers this year too are expected to increasein the next few months.


Afterstillness for nearly two years, travel agents too have breathed a sigh of hope and liberation.


SN Lachungpa, the president of Travel Agents Association of Sikkim (TAAS) said that during the peak season, all hotels, home stays and lodges are fully engaged. Sikkim witnessed considerableincome generation after a prolonged period.


Officials said that nearly 75 per cent of the local population of Sikkim relies on the tourism industry in the state, directly or indirectly.
