New Zealand Tourism Minister Peeni Henare announced that a particular priority for this year’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund will be on the rebuild and recovery from Cyclone Gabrielle and other recent weather events.

“There has been considerable damage to parts of the country that would otherwise be popular tourist destinations,” Peeni Henare said.

“We have spoken to local councils to get a sense of what the priorities are, and as a result we would like to support those places where a lot of our tourism infrastructure needs repair or replacement.”

Councils and non-profit organisations can now apply to create and support local tourism infrastructure.

Repairing damaged structures, neighbourhood walkways and cycling routes, sewage and water repairs, and safety modifications are some examples.

A secondary goal of this year’s grant is to strengthen resilience in areas with a low ratepayer base but a large visitor population. In addition, the fund will continue to prioritise initiatives that demonstrate the need for more visitor-related public infrastructure.

The fund helps councils with co-funding. A panel of members from local governments, central government agencies, and people with experience in the tourism and infrastructure sectors evaluates applications.

The fund is open for applications from 11 April until 8 May.
